When to Update the MCS-150 (Biennial Update)
Purpose:
Biennial updates must be done every other year during the time period assigned by the operator's USDOT number.
When is my update due?
- When you begin your operation
- When you have a change in information
(Address, telephone number, email, # of power units, etc) - Every other year during your renewal period
Renewal Periods
The last digit of the USDOT number indicates the month during which filing is due. An update must be done even if a recent update has been filed.
Number ends in:
1 - January
2 - February
3 - March
4 - April
5 - May
6 - June
7 - July
8 - August
9 - September
0 - October
Second to last number:
Even number - Even numbered years
Odd number - Odd numbered years
Scams and Third Party Services
Please note, many third party services may contact a motor carrier insisting they are due for their biennial update and offering to do so for a fee. USDOT does not charge a fee for the service and in most cases it can be easily done by the operator free of charge. In addition, some companies frequently send out mailings or notices offering this service even when an update is not due in a common scam.
Can I update the MCS-150 before the due date?
FMCSA considers any update of the MCS-150 that was completed by a motor carrier at any time during the 12 months immediately preceding the biennial update due date to satisfy the biennial update requirement.
Our internal policy is that we should not update the MCS-150 if it was updated less than 4 months prior to the due date.
